Many of the most special sights in Portugal can be found in Central Portugal, Leiria and are easy to visit from Casa das Flores. 3 of the 7 wonders of Portugal are in the district of Leiria (Castle of Obidos, Monastery of Batalha and Monastery of Alcobaça). In addition, there are special locations on the UNESCO World Heritage list, such as the University of Coimbra and the Convent of Christ. Come and see for yourself.

Leiria

The castle (Castelo de Leiria) is 20 minutes from our Casa. The central street is “Marques de Pombal”. There is a bus station near this street, which provides easy access to all major cities in Spain (Madrid, Barcelona) and Paris. Chain stores in this city are Ulmar, Lidl, Pinko, Zara etc.

Tomar

Tomar is a Tuscan oriented town, located in the center of Portugal. The buildings in the city have beautiful warm colors. In the cozy center there are beautiful medieval facades full of azulejos. In the center you can also go very well if you like shopping. In Tomar is also the famous beautiful Convento do Cristo with the most famous window in Portugal.

Alcobaça

The monumental Santa Maria Monastery from 1178 is located here and is on the list of the Unesco World Heritage List. There are tombs in the church. Besides visiting this beautiful monastery, it is cozy with nice alleys and shops and restaurants.

Batalha

Here is a huge Dominican monastery surrounded by white houses. Festivities are organized here every year around 15 August. Cozy terraces and shop.

Óbidos

At about 45 minutes drive you will find the medieval town of Óbidos, this is one of the most picturesque and best preserved fortified towns in Portugal and certainly worth a visit. Throughout the season, this city has festivities, in summer there is a medieval festival every year

Caldas da Rainha

Caldas da Rainha is a royal spa with many monumental buildings and churches. There is a market here every Monday and it is a lively city.

Coimbra

Coimbra was also the capital of Portugal until the political center of the country moved South to Lisbon. The city’s University is one of the longest established in Europe and its beautiful buildings are open to the public. You may need to put on your comfortable shoes while exploring this pretty town on the banks of the Mondego River – it’s not all history, there are boutiques, bars, cafes and restaurants to suit everyone. Modern (shopping centers) and supermarkets can be found on the north side of the river. During the summer months there are open air concerts with international artists. There are theaters and cinemas that are open all year round.

Lisbon

The beautiful versatile Lisbon (airport) is about 140 km from our Casa. You can take a nice day trip to this great city and look up the crowds, and then quietly return to Casa das Flores in the evening.

Natural Park Serras de Aire e Candeeiros

The greatest wealth of the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park is hidden. This limestone mountain range is a paradise for caving enthusiasts, some of which have been made accessible to visitors, such as the Santo António, Moeda, Mira d’Aire and Alvados caves.

There are 18 species of bats (symbol of the park) that find ideal hiding places here in the caves.

Close to the river Rio Maior are the rock salt banks where you can attend the extraction of the salt, which is done according to tradition.
On the eastern slope of the Serra de Aire Mountains, about 10 km from the pilgrimage site of Fátima, are the world’s largest and most important dinosaur tracks of a mid-Jurassic sauropod.
To discover this protected area, you can choose from 16 hiking trails marked in the park.
