The Grutas (Caves) de
Mira de Aire are the largest
and most spectacular caves in Portugal. The caves are
situated around 20 minutes drive from Casa das Flores
Bed & Breakfast and are an
fascinating place to visit.
The caves, which had been known about for
decades, were only officially opened to the public in 1974.
The caves are a serious of amazing
formations of stalactites and stalagmites with strange names
including 'Jelly fish' 'Church Organ' and 'Hell's Door'.
The caves take approximately three quarters
of an hour to walk through and there are number of 'slippy' steps to
navigate down.
The guided tour
through the caves finishes at an underground lake with an unusual
fountain.
The caves are open from March through to
October daily and prices vary depending upon the date. For more
